Prior to setup cloud archiving there are a few things that you will need to consider such as:
- Amount of data to archive?
- How fast internet connectivity is?
- How large is the largest file that users might want to access?
All three of these are crucial to the performance of the archiving solution. First the files will need to be moved to the archive storage across the local internet connection, and then when any users want to access those archive files, they will need to be recalled over it.
If you can migrate everything that has not been used in three years to storage, then as a guide, it is recommended you allow for 75% of your total system of files to be archived. Of course, the percent will vary, and you can always turn up or down the age settings as required.
First it is recommended that you calculate how long it will take to move 75% of your file system to cloud storage over your local internet connection. This is an easy computation but keep in mind not to mix up Mb’s (MegaBits) and MB’s (megabytes). The size of your file system will typically be calculated in MB’s and speed of the line will be calculated in Mb’s. You merely divide the number of Mb’s by 8 to transfer to MB’s.
You will need to establish what the largest size archived file is that will normally be accessed and work out how long it will take for that size file to go over the internet connection. You can set size limits on files to be moved, as that might help if there are a small number of these larger files. If many files are especially large, if the connection of the internet is not very fast or if it will take a long time to move all the files to cloud storage then maybe it would be better off using storage that stands alone on your site such as a NAS device. If you are happy to proceed up and the above numbers add up, setting up archiving is really very simple.
Once your cloud VM is up running with a Windows OS, you then should setup your site-to-site VPN. Almost all cloud sources will permit you to set up a site-to-site VPN between your cloud requirement and on-site infrastructure. This VPN is vital, as it will let connectivity between your cloud service as well as your internet infrastructure; it is across this VPN that files will be transferred as well as retrieved.
When configuring the connections for outbound on your VPN you will need to make certain that the server ArchiverFS will run or has access to it and ensure that all your workstations will be able to access it also. When a workstation clicks on a link that is left behind by ArchiverFS all the IO goes directly from the workstation to the archive server, it does not go through the ArchiverFS server.
Then when configuring the connections for inbounds, you need to ensure the cloud archive server can connect to at least one domain controller on your network. The cloud server will also need to be a member of your domain if you want to retain permissions (we assuming you do).
Once the VPN is setup and configured any firewall rules you should be able to easily join your cloud server to your domain as a member server. Then, create a test share on your archive server and make sure both the ArchiverFS server as well as your users can access the new test share over the VPN. Once you finish configuring and testing your cloud server as well as VPN, you need to work through the Quick Setup Guide or the User Guide to complete the setup.
Amazon Glacier archiving
Amazon Storage Gateway allows you to introduce Amazon storage volumes to your local network as if they were being hosted on your local on-site servers. Additionally, you will be able to put into place policies for moving old files from your storage volumes to Glacier storage routinely. In principal this allows you to implement an Amazon Storage Gateway on site and use it to present an Amazon storage volume to the local network. This local volume then can be used as archive storage for one or more jobs archiving, and if shortcuts are used in place of archived files the files can be automatically move to Amazon Glacier,
